Keeping an Eye on Your Skin

A new mole, one that has changed shape or colour, or something you have been meaning to get looked at for months. It is worth getting checked.

Skin cancer rates are rising, melanoma in particular, and it is one of the cancers where catching it early makes the biggest difference to treatment.

Examined Under Dermoscopy

Our doctors use a dermatoscope, which magnifies and lights the lesion, to tell a harmless mole from one worth investigating.

Mole Checks

We offer dedicated appointments to look at a specific mole or lesion you are worried about.

Our doctors use dermoscopy, a handheld device that magnifies and illuminates the skin. It shows the structure underneath, well past what the naked eye can pick up, which is what separates a harmless mole from one that needs investigating.

It is worth including a skin check in your annual review.

Skin Conditions

We also diagnose and manage the common skin complaints:

  • Eczema and dermatitis: getting flare-ups under control and keeping them there.
  • Acne: prescription treatments, and referral if Roaccutane is on the cards.
  • Rashes and infections: fungal, viral and bacterial.
  • Psoriasis: long-term management.

If a lesion needs removing or biopsying, we will refer you promptly to a dermatologist or plastic surgeon.

Minor Procedures

A few things we can do here rather than sending you elsewhere and waiting.

Ear Wax Removal

Wax build-up is normal, but it can affect your hearing and cause earache, dizziness and tinnitus. It is best dealt with properly rather than at home, where cotton buds usually make it worse.

We offer ear syringing, carried out by one of our GPs.

Before you come: Put warm olive oil or pharmacy ear drops in the affected ear for about a week beforehand, to soften the wax. It makes the procedure quicker and more comfortable.

Blood Tests

We take blood here at the practice, whether it is part of an appointment, a health check, or routine monitoring for something you are already on.

Samples go to accredited laboratories and results usually come back in two to three days.
